France Protests | త్రినేత్ర న్యూస్‌: ఫ్రాన్స్‌లో గ‌త కొన్ని రోజులుగా జ‌రుగుతున్న ఆందోళ‌న‌లు(France Protests) హింసాత్మ‌కంగా మారాయి. దేశంలో పెరుగుతున్న ఇంధ‌న ధ‌ర‌లు, జీవన వ్యయానికి వ్యతిరేకంగా జ‌రుగుతున్న ఉద్య‌మాలు శ‌నివారం తీవ్ర‌రూపం దాల్చాయి. ప‌లు న‌గరాల్లో పెద్ద సంఖ్య‌లో విద్యార్థులు, పౌరులు వీధుల్లో చేప‌ట్టిన‌ నిర‌స‌న ప్ర‌ద‌ర్శ‌న‌ల్లో హింస చోటుచేసుకుంది. లిమోజెస్ (Limoges) నగరంలో ఉన్న 143 ఏండ్ల‌ నాటి చారిత్రక మున్సిపల్ భవనం (Limoges Town Hall) ఈ ఆందోళ‌న కారుల ఆగ్ర‌హానికి కాలి బూడిదైంది. కిటికీలు పగలగొట్టి, లోపలికి చొరబడిన ఆందోళ‌నకారులు భ‌వ‌నానికి నిప్పు పెట్టారు. మంట‌ల తీవ్ర‌త‌కు ఈ చారిత్రక భవనానికి సంబంధించిన క్లాక్ ట‌వ‌ర్‌ (Clock Tower) కూలిపోయింది. పశ్చిమ భాగం మినహా మిగిలిన భవనం పైకప్పు కుప్పకూలిపోయింది.

పారిస్ సిటీ హాల్ స్ఫూర్తితో లిమోజ‌స్‌లో నియో-రినైసెన్స్ శైలిలో ఈ టౌన్ హాల్‌ను 1883లో నిర్మించారు. దీనిని 1975లో చారిత్రక చిహ్నంగా (Landmark) ప్రకటించారు. ప్రపంచ యుద్ధాల సమయంలోనూ చెక్కుచెదరకుండా నిలిచిన ఈ భ‌వ‌నం ఇప్పుడు ఆందోళ‌నకారుల చేతిలో ద‌గ్ధ‌మైంది.

దేశ‌వ్యాప్తంగా సుమారు 5.5 లక్షల మంది రోడ్లపైకి వచ్చి నిరసనలు తెలిపార‌ని అధికారులు వెల్ల‌డించారు. రాజ‌ధాని పారిస్‌లోనే (Paris) 1.1 లక్షల మందికి పైగా ఆందోళనల్లో పాల్గొన్నారు. పారిస్, మార్సెయిల్, లియోన్, లిల్లే వంటి నగరాల్లో తీవ్ర విధ్వంసం జరిగింది. రాజ‌ధానిలోని లూయిస్ విట్టన్, హెర్మిస్, ఆపిల్ వంటి లగ్జరీ షోరూమ్‌ల అద్దాలు పగలగొట్టి నిరసనకారులు వస్తువులను దోచుకెళ్లారు. వందలాది కార్లను తగులబెట్టారు. ది లీ రిప‌బ్లిక్‌లోని కార్యాల‌యాల‌పై ప‌టాకులు అంటించి విసిరేశారు. మార్సెయిల్ (Marseille), లిల్లే నగరాల్లోని సిటీ హాళ్లతోపాటు ఓ పోలీస్ స్టేష‌న్‌, ప‌లు దుకాణాల‌ను ఆందోళ‌న‌కారులు ధ్వంసం చేశారు.

ఇక దేశంలో మూడో అతిపెద్ద న‌గ‌ర‌మైన లియోన్‌ (Lyon)లోనూ అల్ల‌ర్లు చెల‌రేగాయి. ఓ టూరిజం కార్యాలయానికి నిప్పు పెట్టారు. బొర్డోక్స్‌ (Bordeaux) లోని పోలీస్ కాంపౌండ్‌పై కూడా దాడి చేశారు. పోలీసుల‌పై దాడుల‌కు పాల్ప‌డ‌టంతో ఆందోళనకారులను అదుపు చేయడానికి భారీగా టియర్ గ్యాస్, వాటర్ కేనన్లను ప్రయోగించారు. ఈ హింసాత్మ‌క ఘ‌ర్ష‌ణ‌ల్లో ఇప్ప‌టివ‌ర‌కు 900 మందికిపైగా భ‌ద్రతా సిబ్బంది, పోలీసులు తీవ్రంగా గాయ‌ప‌డ్డారు.

కాగా, శ‌నివారం ఒక్క‌రోజే సుమారు 1,200 మందికి పైగా ఆందోళనకారులను పోలీసులు అరెస్టు చేశారు. దేశ‌వ్యాప్తంగా ఆందోళ‌న‌కారులు విధ్వంసానికి పాల్ప‌డ‌టాన్ని అధ్యక్షుడు ఇమాన్యుయెల్ మాక్రాన్ తీవ్రంగా ఖండించారు. ప్రభుత్వ ఆస్తులను, చారిత్రక కట్టడాలను ధ్వంసం చేసిన వారిని కఠినంగా శిక్షిస్తామని ప్రకటించారు.

🇫🇷🔥 Limoges city hall set on fire by rioters at the end of the Oct. 17 protest; the bell tower collapsed and the prefect says the building is "largely lost"

Rioters attacked Limoges' hôtel de ville late Saturday afternoon after the Oct. 17 cost-of-living march, breaking windows and setting fire to the ground floor; cars were also burned outside. Firefighters arrived shortly after 6 p.m., and the flames reached the roof around 7 p.m. and were still burning at 8:10 p.m. The 43-meter bell tower collapsed. Prefect Maurice Barate said the roof fell onto the lower floors except in the west wing and two-thirds of the facade had disappeared, calling the building "largely lost," a "heritage catastrophe" and a "deliberate act" by rioters. The 19th-century building, opened in 1883 and inspired by Paris's city hall, is a listed monument. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed the fire; Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said "we will not be intimidated." Earlier in Limoges, fireworks mortars were fired at police near the A20 interchange, a police vehicle was burned and shops were looted. Reported by AFP, franceinfo, Europe 1 and Flash FM.

NOT CONFIRMED: Which artworks and decorations inside have been destroyed. Claims that works by Henri-Paul Motte, Jean-Joseph Weerts and Urbain Bourgeois are definitively lost have not been confirmed by officials, and no inventory has been published. I also found no figure on injuries or arrests in Limoges.

Saturday's national mobilization against the cost of living drew a very large turnout, with CNews reporting more than 550,000 demonstrators, while violence was concentrated in Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Limoges, including a brief break-in at Marseille's city hall.

The loss of a historic city hall turns a day of mostly peaceful marches into a symbolic national event and will dominate the political response. What to watch: the official damage and heritage assessment once the fire is out, arrests and charges for arson, the government's response including any new security measures, and whether the unions and student groups distance themselves from the violence.
